Apply Coupons

Coupons let you offer discounts on your paid plans. This article covers how to create them and the three ways they can be applied to a client's subscription.

Creating a Coupon

Settings > Coupons

Go to Settings > Coupons to create and monitor your coupons. The page is open to an Owner or an Admin and needs Stripe connected; until then you'll see the Connect Your Stripe Account screen instead of the coupon list. Click Create Coupon to open the New Coupon panel.

Coupon Name

Give it a name — this is the code your clients will actually enter. It can contain only letters and numbers, up to 40 characters, and must be unique. If you reuse a name, you'll see "A coupon with this name already exists. Please choose a different name".

Apply to Specific Plans (Optional)

You can also restrict a coupon to specific paid plans by selecting them here. For example, a coupon restricted to your Gold plan only discounts payments for that plan — it simply won't apply for a client on a different one. Leave the field empty and the coupon works on all of your plans; the coupon's card then shows "Applies to all plans".

Coupon Duration

Select Duration

Choose whether the coupon lasts Once or Forever. On a monthly subscription, a Once coupon discounts a single payment; a Forever coupon discounts every payment going forward.

Coupon Value

Select Type and Discount Value

Set the value as either a Percentage (for example, 20% off, any value from 1 to 100) or a Fixed Amount, where you first choose a currency and then the amount (for example, $20 off). If you use a fixed amount, match the currency to the one you use for your plan pricing.

One combination isn't allowed: a fixed amount with a Forever duration. If you try to save it, you'll see "You can't set a fixed-amount coupon with a "forever" duration" — for an open-ended discount, use a percentage.

Monitoring and Deleting Coupons

The Coupon Card

Each coupon gets a card showing its Duration, Discount, Usage (how many times it has been redeemed) and the Plans it applies to, with a button to copy the code so you can paste it to a client.

Deleting a Coupon

The trash button deletes the coupon after a confirmation. Deleting doesn't affect clients who already have it applied — their discount continues — it only stops new clients from redeeming it.

Applying Coupons at Sign-Up

Allow Coupons

Coupons can be applied right when a client signs up, through the payment link. To allow this, enable Allow coupons in the Other section of the paid plan's settings. The checkout then shows a promotion code field.

On a plan with no free trial, the coupon is applied immediately to the first payment. On a plan with a free trial, it's applied when the trial ends and the first payment is triggered.

Clients Applying a Coupon Themselves

From the Client's Billing Section

A client can also apply a coupon after they've already subscribed — useful if you hand them one later on. From Settings > Billing, they open the Stripe Billing menu, choose Apply Coupon, enter the code and save. The discount takes effect from their next billing cycle. If the code is unknown or expired, they'll see "The coupon code entered is invalid or has expired."

That menu option only appears when two things are true: the plan they're on has Allow coupons enabled, and no discount is applied to their subscription yet. Otherwise they just get the plain Open Billing Portal button.

Applying a Coupon as the Agency

Apply Coupon on the Client Card

You can apply a coupon to a client's subscription yourself, too. In the Clients section, hover over the paid client's card and click Apply Coupon in the top-left, then pick one of your coupons — the list shows only coupons valid for that client's plan, each with its discount and duration. Save, and the discount lands on their next payment.

This action is available to an Owner or an Admin, and exists only on paid client cards: free clients have no Stripe subscription, so there's nothing to discount.

One Coupon at a Time

Coupons Don't Stack

Clients can only have one coupon active on their subscription at a time. If one is already applied, the Apply Coupon action disappears from the card and the client's own Apply Coupon option disappears too — no additional coupon can be added on top of it. You can see at a glance which clients are discounted: their card shows a percentage icon next to the price, with the code, the discount and the duration in the tooltip.
