The Tax tab of the Accounting page is where you tell Stripe Tax where your business is based and where you're registered to collect tax. This article explains both settings and the plan options that control tax at checkout.
Where to Find It
Settings > Accounting > Tax
Go to Settings > Accounting in the Finance group, then click the Tax tab in the top right. The tab opens two Stripe panels stacked on the same screen, under the headings Tax Settings and Tax Registration.
Prerequisites
Like every Finance page, the tab is open to an Owner or an Admin and needs Stripe connected and onboarded. Both panels are Stripe's own components: what you enter is stored in your Stripe account, and Stripe, not Climbo, calculates the tax.
Tax Settings
Your Tax Address
Your tax address is where your business is legally based. Stripe uses it to work out your tax situation, including whether and how taxes such as VAT apply to your sales. Enter it carefully and keep it up to date: a wrong address produces wrong tax on real invoices.
Tax Registration
Where You Are Registered to Collect
Tax registrations are the places — countries, or states in some countries — where you're officially registered to collect tax. They control whether tax is charged at checkout: Stripe Tax only calculates and adds tax in jurisdictions where you have an active registration. Anywhere you haven't registered, no tax is added, even if that jurisdiction has one.
In Practice
You add a registration for each country or region where you're required, or have chosen, to collect tax — for example registering for VAT in the EU countries you sell into, or for sales tax in specific US states. Once a registration is active, Stripe automatically works out the correct rate for that jurisdiction and applies it to clients paying from there.
Registration Alone Is Not Enough
Show Taxes at Checkout
Tax is only calculated on plans with Show taxes at checkout turned on. This option lives in the plan's Price tab, not on this page, and you can change it at any time (see the Paid Plans article). With it off, no taxes appear at checkout; with it on, they appear only once you've added the matching tax registration here. If tax is missing from a client's checkout, check this option on the plan before suspecting your registrations.
Include Tax in Price
The plan's Include tax in price option decides whether the amount you typed is treated as already containing tax or as a net price with tax added on top. This one is part of the price itself and is locked after the plan is created — the field is shown read-only when you edit an existing plan. If you need the other behavior, create a new plan with the correct setting.
Tax ID Collection
The plan's Tax ID collection option lets business clients enter their tax or VAT identification number during checkout, so it ends up on the invoice they receive from you. Like Show taxes at checkout, it stays editable after the plan exists.
Staying Compliant
Double-Check Before You Sell
Always verify that your tax address and registrations are correct before running real checkouts. Tax that was calculated wrongly has to be fixed on invoices your clients have already received, which is far more work than checking these two panels. Deciding where and when you need to register is up to you and your accountant; the platform doesn't decide it for you.
