Free Plan Upgrade

A client on a free plan can upgrade to one of your paid plans at any time and keep everything they've already set up. This article explains how the upgrade works and what to check first.

How to Upgrade

From the Client's Own Billing Section

In Settings > Billing, the client sees two tabs: Free Plans and Paid Plans. The Paid Plans tab lists your paid plans, each with a Select Plan button. Clicking it opens a pricing dialog with the plan's monthly and yearly prices. Choosing one opens that plan's payment link, where the client completes the purchase with their email and payment details.

Only plans you haven't hidden from the billing portal appear there, so you decide exactly which upgrades to offer. The Billing section itself can also be switched off per plan with Billing Section: if the client's free plan has it off, they won't have this page at all, and you'll need to send them the payment link yourself.

Or You Handle It for Them

You can also send the client the paid plan's payment link yourself, copied from the plan's card in the Plans section, and have them complete the checkout the same way.

What Happens Next

As soon as the payment goes through, their free account automatically becomes a paid account — on the plan they just subscribed to, with the features, integrations and limits of that plan. You'll see this reflected on your side too: in the Clients section their card becomes a paid client card, with the plan, the price, the payment method and a status that from then on follows Stripe.

Switching Between Free Plans

On the Free Plans tab the client can see your free plans, but the only thing offered is Contact us to switch — free clients can't move themselves between free plans. Those changes are yours to make, with Change Plan on the client's card.

Why the Email Must Match

The Email Links the Two Accounts

The email the client uses to complete registration through the payment link must be exactly the same as the one they used for their free plan.

If it matches, the existing account simply switches from free to paid — everything they've already set up (integrations, connected location, and so on) stays exactly as it was, just under the new plan.

If it doesn't match — because of a typo, for example — a brand new paid account is created instead, with no connection to the existing free account. The client would have to redo onboarding and reconnect all their integrations, so double-check that the email matches exactly before completing the upgrade.

One Thing to Check First

Set the Client to Active Before a Trial Upgrade

If the paid plan has a free trial, make sure the client's free-client status is Active before they sign up. A trial subscription is automatically canceled if the same email already has an account on your platform in Trialing, Unpaid, Paused, Past Due or an incomplete state — a safeguard against the same person starting trial after trial. Free clients are Active by default, so this only matters if you've changed their status by hand.
